Interdisciplinary research increasingly relies on computing to connect diverse fields and drive innovation. Times Higher Education reported a 22% increase in university participation in its Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) 2026, noting that interdisciplinarity is now a strategic priority for many institutions. The United States National Science Foundation similarly gives high priority to research that transcends the scope of a single discipline. In this environment, computing acts as a central link, enabling applications from quantum computing in astrophysics to computer vision in cancer detection.

Expanding the scope of partnerships

The growing use of computing methods in research has increased demand for computer scientists and engineers across academia, government, and non-profit sectors. The IEEE Computer Society Digital Library (CSDL) offers opportunities for discovery and publishing that support this cross-disciplinary work. An analysis of the CSDL content revealed strong ties between computer science and a wide range of schools and departments, including business and management, electronic engineering, data science, mathematics, accounting and finance, economics, information systems, environmental studies, geography and geographic information systems, biology, bioinformatics, health sciences, and operational research. This accessibility makes the CSDL a useful tool for building collaborations that span these varied fields.

Connecting disparate areas of study requires more than a casual introduction or a referral from an advisor. Successful engineering collaborations need an innovative idea, a working knowledge of related research in ancillary fields, and a clear vision for the roles and responsibilities of each partner. To advance interdisciplinary computer science and engineering work, researchers should focus on three key areas. First, they must explore new research possibilities through specified subject reviews. When an idea sparks, existing research must back it up. Sourcing papers indexed in the CSDL helps researchers focus their investigation by pulling the latest articles or discovering research-in-progress from conference proceedings in a particular field.

Identifying strategic areas of opportunity

Using the CSDL for these purposes starts with having the right resources in place. The platform provides a single tool to help advance innovation by delivering highly cited research that spans a variety of vertical markets. This offers deeper knowledge on specific topics and insights into potential collaboration partners. HernĂ¡n Astudillo, a professor at the Informatics, Health and Wellness Technology Institute at Andres Bello University in Chile, highlighted the library’s value. He noted that he does a lot of interdisciplinary work, such as in heritage computing and health informatics, and that other faculty members in informatics and electronics also use the CSDL because it fits their scope.

By delivering more than one million top-quality articles, papers, and conference publications, the CSDL supports researchers in exploring diverse projects from a computer science and engineering point of view. The collection provides both current and historical perspectives that fuel new ideas.
