Birmingham City Schools is launching a three‑year study that links student motivation to math achievement, using the game‑based platform ST Math and backed by a grant from the Gates Foundation.

Partnership brings data‑driven insight to classrooms

The district has teamed with WestEd and MIND Education, the creator of ST Math, to design a research framework that captures real‑time engagement data. It aims to turn motivation into a measurable indicator, allowing teachers to spot when learners lose focus and intervene promptly.

“ST Math has always excelled at motivating students to persist through challenging puzzles, and this project takes that a step further by transforming motivation into a dynamic, measurable KPI,” said Andrew Coulson, chief data scientist at MIND Research Institute. He noted that the platform’s gameplay logs will be used to create a “right‑now” metric for motivation.

According to the superintendent, Dr. Mark Sullivan, the effort aligns with Birmingham City Schools’ emphasis on evidence‑based strategies. “Learning doesn’t just happen when students are given access to strong curriculum—it also requires students to be engaged and motivated,” he said.

How the study will measure and improve learning

ST Math’s visual, puzzle‑based approach differs from traditional math programs that rely on rote procedures. By recording how long students work on each puzzle and the strategies they employ, the system generates a detailed picture of persistence, effort, and challenge‑seeking behavior.

The study will produce models for measuring motivation that can be shared with educators beyond Birmingham. Findings are expected to influence instructional design, teacher training, and future ed‑tech implementations nationwide.

Comparing this effort to previous district‑level pilots, the current project stands out for its depth of data collection and its commitment to co‑design. Earlier attempts often relied on post‑hoc surveys, which provided limited insight into moment‑by‑moment engagement. By embedding measurement tools directly into the learning platform, Birmingham hopes to capture a more accurate and actionable signal.

District officials say the initiative also addresses a broader challenge: many digital learning tools are underused because students disengage before mastering concepts. Turning motivation into a quantifiable metric enables educators to adjust instruction in real time, potentially reducing wasted instructional minutes.

The Gates Foundation’s RDI strategy, which funds the project, seeks to strengthen research capacity within districts while encouraging developers to refine their products based on rigorous findings. All three partners intend to publish the results, offering a template for other districts seeking to evaluate the impact of ed‑tech on learner outcomes.
